You will need some mechanism to update mender.conf n the case that changes are needed. That can be using a file-based (Single File) or script-based update (Script) or some other out-of-band mechanism.
I cannot comment on the safety of the site. If the cert cannot be verified then you are vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks.
